My "Wish You Were Here" Playlist
Given the circumstances of our world right now, that melancholic "wish you were here" vibe is inevitable...here are some songs to nurse that feeling.
Let's start, shall we?
Home - Michael Bublé
"And I'm surrounded by, a million people, I still feel alone, I just want to go home."
Although this song talks about going home, it makes me think of a place that I want to be in; a place where even if you're far from home, you won't feel it because you're so comfortable where you are.
Talking To The Moon - Bruno Mars
"In hopes you're on the other side, talking to me too."
This one is a pretty obvious choice. I never search what the meaning of songs are because I like to interpret it the way that I feel it. So, for me this one to me is talking of someone on the other side of the moon, pretty far away that hasn't come back in a long time.
Your Sky - Lionfield
"We're not far, only a text away...we are two planets, one sky apart."
I know I add this song and duo to my playlists all the time, but it's because they're so versatile that their music works for every mood. This one definitely fits the, "wish you were here" vibe, especially the line above that makes me very emotional every time I hear it.
Mi Manchi - Andrea Bocelli, Kenny G
"Ora che io posso darti un po' di più, e tu mi manchi e potrei amare un'altra donna ma, mi ingannerei."
The title and song is in Italian but it literally translates to, "I miss you." There's something in the Italian language that when you say, "I miss you." You say "Mi manchi" which means more of a "you're missing from me"...That alone makes this song perfect for this playlist.
Il Tuo Sguardo Manca - Il Volo
"E succede ogni sera, la tua assenza mi avvelena...che il mio cuore è stanco, di aspettarti invano."
This is perfection. The lyrics about a love that was lost, and how your heart just cannot take it anymore. "Il Tuo Sguardo Manca" means "Your Gaze is Missing". It's funny how something so simple can make or break your day, like the gaze of a certain someone that you wish to see, and keep waiting for.
Half A Heart - One Direction
"Only half a blue sky, kinda there but not quite, I'm walking around with just one shoe, I'm half a heart without you."
Say what you will about One Direction, but they had some pretty heart-wrenching songs. This one uses many metaphors about things that are incomplete without their other half, including their heart. It makes me think of all the things that would be a lot better if certain people were around.
I Bring You To My Senses - Il Volo
"I lie awake, and wish the miles would melt away...I see you when I close my eyes, I feel you on my fingertips, I taste you on my lips."
One more Il Volo track for this playlist...I heard this a long time ago and never really thought much of it, then I grew up a bit and since COVID-19 started, I haven't been able to listen to this without thinking of all the things that I did before, and how a simple thought can bring me right back to that time; even simple things, like remembering the scent of the school hallway, the feeling of someones hand...just closing my eyes, and I'm right wherever I want to be.
Get Here - Sam Smith
"You can reach me in a big balloon, but you better make it soon...I don't care how you get here, just get here if you can."
One thing that my family and friends in Italy always tell me is to jump on a plane and visit them. And although I would love to, more than anything, it's just a bit impossible right now, given the circumstance. Sometimes, I really don't care how, I just want it to happen and fast.
Awake - Josh Groban
"Keep me awake, to memorize you, give me more time to feel this way. We can't stay like this forever, but I can have you next to me today."
"Give me more time to feel this way." This line makes the entire song fit perfectly in my "wish you were here" playlist. It makes me think of the joys in life that I want to relive, that I wish I had more time to enjoy, thus making me wish those people were around to then enjoy the moment with.
Ayer - Diego Boneta
"Como me duele saber, que esto es algo que solo soñé."
This song talks about a dream that the subject had, and how sweet this dream was, but he was sad to wake up and realize it was all just a dream. That's the beautiful thing about our minds, that we can be wherever we want and with whomever we want, but the issue remains that when we awake, we will have that "wish you were here" feeling, wishing it was all real, more than a dream.
And so, a bit more of an emotional playlist, I hope you enjoyed it. Which feeling/mood do you want to see next?
Vi voglio bene,
Melissa
