My Top 6 Italian Movies For Italian Language Learners

Films are a large part of learning any language. From teaching you how to speak like a native to understanding the typical speed that the language is spoken at. Plus, who doesn't love a good movie or TV Show cuddling up with a blanket and some popcorn?

These are my top 6 Italian movies and TV shows to help you learn at any stage you are at in the language.

Beginner

• La Sirenetta: This movie is "The Little Mermaid" in English. It was originally meant per i bambini, so it's easy to understand as the characters speak relatively slowly and the language isn't very complicato. This movie can be found on Disney+, and to change the language just press the box in the top right corner of your screen!

• La Vita è Bella: This is probably one of my favourite Italian movies. The story is so moving and Roberto Benigni is un tesoro Italiano. The fact that this movie is molto espressivo, (as per Italian style), even watching it on mute or in a language you don't understand completely, you will still get the plot of the movie. This movie can be found at your public library or on Youtube!

Intermediate

• Benvenuto Presidente: This movie is hilarious, I want to watch it again right now, veramente. Anyway, it is perfect for someone who has a good base of Italian, enough to follow along with Italian subtitles as you watch. It has the same idea that it's molto espressivo so you can understand what is going on by their actions to help your comprensione. This movie can be found on Netflix!

• Slam: This teen romance movie would be ideal for an intermediate learner. There are many scenes of anger in which the actors speak rabbiosamente e velocemente, and that's a good skill to master in Italian, whether you want to know how to go off on someone so they don't understand or you're preparing to go to Italy! This movie can be found on Netflix as well.

Advanced

• Una Grande Famiglia: This isn't a movie, it's a TV Show that I adore. I used to watch this ogni sera after dinner, and I would look forward to it all day. The dialogue is molto drammatico e romantico which is perfect for people confident in their Italian ability. This show can be found on RaiPlay! P.S. for those of you that are ready, this show doesn't come with subtitles!

• Un Medico In Famiglia: This is also a TV Show. It is a comedy/drama, with many children in it who - to the untrained ear - are difficili to understand, but it's perfect for an advanced learner to watch. Shows like these were on la televisione Italiana for the natives to enjoy, so if your goal is to be train your ear to be as native as possible, this is the show for you. It can be found on RaiPlay, also without any subtitles available!
