Lesson #2: Pronouns

Lesson 2 of the lessons I taught at the beginning of the pandemic last year! Enjoy!

Buongiorno! Let's get right into the lesson today, shall we?

So, the pronouns we will be working with today are:

  • Hers/His = Sua/o, suoi, sue

  • Yours = Tua/o, tuoi, tue

  • Mine = Mio/a, miei, mie

  • Your guys' = Vostro/a, vostri, vostre

  • Our = Nostro/a, nostri, nostre

All of these are possessive pronouns, excluding loro, which is more of a simple lesson that will be at the end.

Now, where you would use these pronouns:

  • Sua/o, suoi, sue would all be used when saying his or hers. Typically, (minus exceptions that will be explained shortly) when the object you're describing as his, hers, yours, mine, ours or your guys', ends in a, o, i, or e, you're going to match the ending to the type of pronoun you're using.

Example:

  • His eyes = I suoi occhi

  • Her sister = La sua sorella

  • His friends (all girls) = Le sue amiche

Notice how all the words end with the same letter in the sentence. P.S. You don't have to put the i, la or le. I typically don't use it, I would just say suoi occhi, which would make you sound more like a native if that's your goal.

  • Tua/o, tuoi, tue would all be used to say yours. The same rules apply as the section above, with sua/o, suoi, sue.

Example:

  • Your eyes = I tuoi occhi

  • Your sister = La tua sorella

  • His friends (all boys) = I suoi amici

Simple as that! The rest of the conjugation with the pronouns are all the same as the two you just saw above.

Examples:

  • My eyes = I miei occhi

  • Our sister = La nostra sorella

  • Your guys' friends (all girls) = Le vostre amiche

Now, the exceptions:

  • Labbra: When saying the word, labbra which means lips, you have to leave it as is, but you change the possession.

  • Canzone: This word, meaning song is a weird one to conjugate. This one would be good for you to remember as, when it's one song, it's e, when it's multiple it's i. Remember, this is not the general case with other words.

Example:

  • Her lips = Le sue labbra

  • His songs = Le sue canzoni

  • Your song = La tua canzone

  • Our songs = Le nostre canzoni

  • Your guys' song = La vostra canzone

Like I promised, I was going to tell you how to use loro now.

  • Loro: This one is another weird one to conjugate. It's best to show you first then explain.

Example:

  • Their friend = Il loro amico

  • Their song = La loro canzone

  • Their eyes = I loro occhi

The best way to think about it is that the loro doesn't change, but the words before and after do.

I hope this helped!

Vi voglio bene,

Meli
